Goal of Activity • To teach middle school students some fundamentals of engineering, specifically, torque • To show them how forces due to torque translate into acceleration of the mousetrap car Learning Engineering Fundamentals from Mousetrap Cars • How the Children Will Learn • As the torque arm gets longer, the acceleration lessens, but the distance traveled lengthens • As the torque arm gets shorter, the acceleration increases, but the distance traveled shortens YoungJooJeong Jonathan Goettler David Torres • What the Children will Learn • The force from the mousetrap torque depends inversely on the length of the arm • The acceleration depends directly on this force • Therefore, the acceleration is inversely proportional to the length of the torque arm
