PAUL’S CONVERSION ACTS 9:1-19
Saul, not Paul… • Saul is armed with legal documents to round up any followers of The Way in Damascus.
LUKE’S NARRATIVE • WHAT HAPPENED? • v. 3 “a light from heaven” shone around him. • v. 4 “He fell to the ground” and “heard a voice” which asks a question and then gives instructions. • v. 7 the men with Saul were “speechless” as they heard a voice “but saw no one”.
Saul the powerful becomes weak, the “terror of the church” now stumbles blindly towards Damascus. • (We should compare this account with Acts 22:3-21, and Acts 26:9-10)
For Luke’s readers there are two implications; • The power of Christ and the Spirit within the church is far greater than any authority. • An attack on the Church is an attack on Christ himself.
God is clear that Saul “is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel” v.15
When Ananias greets Saul as “brother” and lays his hands on Saul, • his sight returns, • Saul is filled with the Holy Spirit and • Saul is baptised
The Immediate Effect • Acts 9:20-25 • Saul’s Preaching at Damascus and Escape • Saul now starts preaching that “Jesus is the Son of God” • starts in the synagogues • persecutor turned preacher of the Way
a plot to kill him emerges and he escapes over the city wall in a basket....The hunter becomes the hunted.
There are three accounts • Acts 9 • Acts 22 • Acts 26
