Then the chemist persuaded Westinghouse’s Industrial Controls Division that an important application lay in the monitoring of combustion products as a means of controlling proper combustion feeds. What was needed, however, was a probe that could operate directly in the stack. After a good deal of research and development, a practical probe was produced. This came along at the time when energy conversion was being intensively pursued and it was demonstrated very soon that the use of such an oxygen probe could effect large economies in boiler operation. It has been twenty five years since Westinghouse first offered an oxygen analyzer for sale. Five years ago, Westinghouse formed a new division to handle just combustion control.
