  29. CSTPs

  30. Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) • In 1990, the Secretary of Labor appointed a commission to determine the skills our young people need to succeed in the world of work. • The commission's fundamental purpose was to encourage a high-performance economy characterized by high-skill, high-wage employment.

  31. SCANS • Although the commission completed its work in 1992, its findings and recommendations continue to be a valuable source of information for individuals and organizations involved in education and workforce development.

  32. Common Core State Standards (CCS) • Provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn • Are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world • Reflect the knowledge and skills that our students need for success in college and careers

  33. Common Core Standards • The CCS for ELA and Mathematics will replace the current CA Content standards in those subjects. • The new Common Core Literacy Standards complement (not replace) standards.

  34. Common Core Standards • Literacy Standards emphasize: • Discipline-specific vocabulary • Unique text structures found in informational text • Students will read and write in all classrooms • Students will develop informational/technical writing skills • A focus on critical analysis and evidence Remember – these standards complement all areas and do not replace any standards

  35. Common Core Standards • College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards • Not part of the standards package adopted by the State Board of Education • Serve as the backbone to Common Core Standards and are key in CTE work • Anchor Standards are the same in every strand, the rational and application differs for grade levels

  36. College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards for Reading • The College and Career Readiness (CCR) anchor standards are designated by number. • The CCR and grade-specific standards are necessary complements—the former providing broad standards, the latter providing additional specificity—that together define the skills and understandings that all students must demonstrate.

  37. CCR Anchor Standards for Reading, Grades 6-12 • Key Ideas and Details • 1. Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text. • 2. Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas. • 3. Analyze how and why individuals, events, or ideas develop and interact over the course of a text.

  38. CCR Anchor Standards for Reading, Grades 6-12 • Craft and Structure • 4. Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone. • 5. Analyze the structure of texts, including how specific sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text (e.g., a section, chapter, scene, or stanza) relate to each other and the whole.

  39. CCR Anchor Standards for Reading, Grades 6-12 • Integration of Knowledge and Ideas • 7. Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse formats and media, including visually and quantitatively, as well as in words.1 • 8. Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, including the validity of the reasoning as well as the relevance and sufficiency of the evidence. • 9. Analyze how two or more texts address similar themes or topics in order to build knowledge or to compare the approaches the authors take.

  40. CCR Anchor Standards for Reading, Grades 6-12 • Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity • 10. Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently.

  41. Common Core and CTE/ROP • Coach your mentees to become familiar with the Common Core Standards • Begin to make curriculum connections • Prepare teachers to be ready for CCS site discussions with academic peers • Encourage your mentees to begin collaboration efforts with academic teachers • Attend a CCS training (you and your mentee)
