  1. OVER FISHING AN ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE

  2. “Overfishing is the act whereby fish stocks are depleted to unacceptable levels, regardless of water body size.”

  3. WHAT OVER FISHING DOES: • Creates huge changes in the food chains of many animals. • Is cruel for the fish. • Causes wastage. • Causes issues concerning the value of life; Do fish have a soul? WHAT A WASTE?!

  4. CONSEQUENCES • According to a 2008 UN report, the world's fishing fleets are losing £50 billion each year through depleted stocks and poor fisheries management. • half the world's fishing fleet could be scrapped with no change in catch. • In addition, the biomass of global fish stocks have been allowed to run down to the point where it is no longer possible to catch the amount of fish that could be caught. • Increased incidence of schistosomiasis in Africa has been linked to declines of fish species that eat the snails carrying the disease-causing parasites.

  5. FOLLOWING ARE IMAGES THAT SOME MAY FIND DISTRESSING

  6. AN EXAMPLE OF FISH CRUELTY:

  7. The Environmental impact of fish farming and over fishing. • Coastal areas worldwide have seen habitat and ecosystem alterations in order to accommodate fish farms. • The coasts of Thailand, Vietnam, and China, as well as those of other countries—have been destroyed to create shrimp and fish farms • The World Resources Institute estimates that “nearly half the land now used for shrimp ponds in Thailand was formerly used for rice paddies; in addition, water diversion for shrimp ponds has lowered groundwater levels noticeably in some coastal areas.”
