Lots of dryer fires happen each year, causing casualties, traumas, building devastation and home loss. Aside from being a fire threat, unfit dryer venting also poses a carbon monoxide problem. These misfortunes can be warded off with correctly installed and maintained dryer vents. A dryer fire manifests when lint accumulates inhibiting airflow which then provokes overheating. The heat and the combustible dryer lint are the principal substances for a dryer fire. Dryers generate a good deal of lint and merely cleaning the lint screen is insufficient. The lint screen entraps a lot of lint but some gets into the back of the dryer, perilously near the pilot light. The most effective means to ensure your dryer ducting equipment is dependable is to have it skillfully inspected and cleaned about once a year. One other concern is the distance of the vent line; the shorter, the better. In years past most washers and dryers were in the basement, on an exterior wall, with a rather short, straight vent to the outdoors. These days some newer houses may have their laundry area positioned away from an outside wall, with some located on the second floor. This means dryer ducts are considerably longer and are composed of some turns where lint can gather. They are also harder to reach and thus harder to keep cleaned. The fitting dryer vent system is short and straight. The parts should also be joined together to make the interior smooth and devoid of screws or rivets that lint can easily snag on. It is essential that the duct be made of stiff material, not the bendable, foil type tube that crumbles quite easily, minimizing air flow. Permit enough space between the clothes dryer and the wall. One error people oftentimes make is shoving the dryer too close to the wall, crushing the vent line and developing an airflow challenge immediately. Here's one last tip that very few people realize. The dryer vent filter should be cleaned well with warm soapy water every few months to remove residue accumulation left behind by fabric softener sheets. It is certainly plausible for the lint filter to have so much accumulation on it that it will hold water! This clearly limits air flow and causes the dryer to take more than one cycle to effectively dry a load of laundry.
