By the end of this unit you will be able to: • Identify MEDCS and LEDCS • Recognise methods used to measure development • Understand why some countries are more developed than others, and how this links to industry and jobs • Identify different types of industry • Understand that development can have a bad side as well as good • Explain how trade affects development • Describe an example of industry in a MEDC and its human and physical outcomes • Describe an example of industry in a LEDC and its human and physical outcomes • Explain the rapid economic growth of newly industrialised countries

By the end of this session… • Stuff you must know… • What development means • What MEDCs and LEDCs are (tip: this does not stand for Manly/Ladylike Eels Don’t Cry, sadly…) • Stuff you should… • How to describe the methods used to measure development • Especially whizzy stuff you could know… • Examples of statistics about world development (frightening facts) which you can use to provide illustrations of the contrast between MEDCs and LEDCs Fine. I’ll just go then. Did someone mention Manly Eels? No? Anyone?!

  4. What is development? How are ‘standard of living’ and ‘quality of life’ different? A country develops as BOTH standard of living and quality of life improve as a result of it getting richer Standard of Living is the MATERIAL well being of a person: e.g. the value of their possessions and savings, type of home they live in and whether they own things like washing machines, TVs, cars, telephones and computers. STandard of Living= STuff Quality of Life is the GENERAL well being of a person: it includes standard of living, but also affected by education, health care, services, utilities, environment, and social, political and religious freedom. Quality of Life = Big Picture

  6. Ways of measuring how developed a country is Your challenge: to discover what the 11 methods are for measuring the development of a country. Use the source to find out the 11, then categorise them in your grid: hEALTH MONEY

  7. What makes a good measure of development? The data needed must be easy to find out. Must be possible to compare across different countries.

Other Indicators • Population- population growth, density, fertility, birth and death rates are all useful ways of measuring development; especially birth and death rates • Human Development Index (HDI)- created by UN in 1990. Income per person, adult literacy and life expectancy are added together and worked out as a score between 0 and 1. The closer to 1, the higher the level of development.

  9. Review Quiz! What do we mean by standard of living? Standard of living refers to material well being of a person- e.g. value of possessions. Standard of living = stuff 2. What do we mean by quality of life? Quality of life refers to the general well being of a person. It includes standard of living but also includes health, education, and religious/political freedoms. 3. What do we mean by development? Simply, countries getting richer! Standard and quality of living both rise with development. 4. What does MEDC mean? More Economically Developed Country 5. What does LEDC mean? Less Economically Developed Country 6. Which regions are MEDC? Western Europe, North America, Australasia 7. Which regions are LEDC? Africa, Asia, South America

  10. 8. Which regions are in transition between LEDC and MEDC? Russia, China, Eastern Europe 9. Name three ways of measuring development linked to money. Gross Domestic Product, Gross National Product, Income per person, Imports and Exports, Employment Structure, Poverty 10. Name three ways of measuring development linked to health Life expectancy, infant mortality, people per doctor, calorific intake 11. What does HDI stand for? Human Development Index. 12. How does population help determine development? Population growth, density, fertility, birth and death rates all give us an idea of development.
