Stages of Reading The emergent reader • knows that the text goes from left to right • can blend • uses picture for clues • retells a simple story which is read to them • knows names of letters • identifies initial and final sounds • understands the difference between letters and words • notices and reads environmental print • reads one word at a time • selects simple repetitious books • reads favourite books over and over • make predictions

Stages of Reading Early Reader • tells main idea • makes predictions and explain why things happen • identifies main characters • begins to differentiate between fact and fiction • identifies high frequency words • some awareness of medial vowel sounds • uses context clues • begins to self correct • understands the meaning of . ? ! • selects a variety of books • begins to feel confident when reading silently or orally

Split the word into parts/syllables.-If the word contains a sound they don’t know, then tell them!-Don’t forget some words can’t be fully sounded out, so help them! (Don’t forget picture clues and meaning).
