  1. BioSecure :A Network of Excellence on Biometric identity authentication B. Dorizzi, GET-INT, France G. Chollet, GET-ENST, Paris

  2. BioSecure : Objectives • Federate the teams involved in the biometric field • Proposal for a NoE with the following objectives : • Identify and meet the scientific and technical challenges in the Biometric field • Explore non technological aspects of biometrics such as security v.s. privacy, acceptability, reliability, impact on society and ethical aspects

  3. Some specific Objectives : • Reference algorithms for most of the Biometric modalities • Evaluation protocols on publically available databases • Fusion of modalities • 4 weeks residential workshop in sept. 2005

  4. General approach foreseen • Collaborative research program • Creation of a European development and evaluation platform for the Technological Research • Creation of a European Certification Center and usage observatory • Support technology : integration on smart-card, PDA etc… • Citizen awareness

  5. Need and Relevance • Commercial products still present some defects : Performance, Variability, User Acceptance, Sensor Variability • European efforts are disseminated • Europe has usage and legislation particularities, cultural diversity • Network • Initiator : GET, 25 partners of COST 275, 12 other academic partners, 20 Industrial and end user partners : ST-Microelectronics, France Telecom, Bouygues Telecom, Gemplus, OPSIS, ELRA/ELDA, ORGA, etc…

  6. Integration • Contribution to standardization : Databases and Evaluation • Federation of most of the 4th and 5th PCRD actions in biometrics • Subnetworks organization / e-communication • Links with : • IP: IRISEP (Iris-based verification) initiated by TRT-France, • Personal Trust Device” , coordinated by IMEC and Gemplus/France, • MOSES, coordinated by INFORMA/Italy, • ICAF “Identity Contol with Automatic Face Recognition”, • coordinated by ZN vision, Germany

  7. 4th and 5th PCRD actionsin Biometrics COST 275 IST projects co-initiated by members of this consortium: • M2VTS (ACTS, 1995-1998) Multimodal Verification for Telesurveillance and Security Applications • BANCA (IST-1999-n°1159) - Biometric Access Control for Networked and e-Commerce Applications • VIRSBS: Visual Intelligent Recognition for Secure Banking Services Some partners are (or were) also involved in other EC projects : MUHCI (RTN, 2000-2003) Multimodal Human Computer Interaction, EAGLES , CAVE, PICASSO, ECVision ( IST Project 35454), SAFE : Secure Access Front End (TRIAL Start-Up -2000-2002), MTM (speaker verification), BIOTEST

  8. Partners • Main academic actors in the field • Must satisfy excellence criteria : publications, PhD, etc… • Involved in different aspects of biometrics • With experience in evaluation campaigns • Question : Place of the Industrials, of the small companies...

  9. Structuration of the network : Topics • Academic research in such modalities as: • speech • face • signature • fingerprint • iris • hand shape etc.. • Multimodality : data fusion

  10. Topics (2) • Non technical questions : legal, market, privacy • Support technologies • Commercial applications

  11. Further Steps • General Assembly on july 2nd, 2004 • Constitution of a « steering committee » • Constitution of a « technical board » with all the coordinators of the Workpackages • Constitution of a Forum of Industrial Partners • Clustering with other projects (in particular BioSec, eCrypt, FIDIS, SecurePhone,…) • …
