  2. Objetivo/Criterio de Exito • Encontrar la raíz y identificar las terminaciones del imperfecto subjuntivo. • Yo puedo conjugar en el pretérito del indicativo. • Yo puedo identificar las terminaciones nuevas. • Yo puedo conjugar un verbo en el imperfecto del subjuntivo.

  3. Forming the Imperfect Subjunctive • Start with the third-person plural form (ellos, ellas, ustedes) form of the preterite. ar aron er/ir  ieron • Drop the –ron ending to establish the imperfect subjunctive root. (The verb root is used for all verbs whether they’re regular, irregular, stem-changing, or spelling-changing verbs.)

  4. Forming the Imperfect Subjunctive • Add the common endings: (There are two sets of endings. Below is the most commonly used: yo: -ra tú: -ras él: -ra nosotros: -´ramos ellos: -ran The endings are the same for –ar/-er/-ir verbs. The vowel that precedes the nosotros ending is always accented.

  11. Los usos del imperfecto de subjuntivo (pastsubjunctive) • When the verb in the MAIN CLAUSE is in a past tense (PRETERITE, IMPERFECT, ONE OF THE PAST PERFECT TENSES, or CONDITIONAL) --¿Qué les queríaquehicieras? “What did he want you to do?” The verb in the main clause is QUERER, and it is in the imperfect tense, so the past subjunctive is used in the dependent clause.

  12. Los usos del imperfecto de subjuntivo (pastsubjunctive) • When the verb in the main clause is in the present, but the SUBORDINATE clause refers to the past. Es dudosoque Carlos vinieraayer. It’s doubtful (that) Carlos cameyesterday.

  13. Los usos del imperfecto de subjuntivo (pastsubjunctive) • To express an impossible or improbable wish. Oscar se va a Miami otravez. Oscar is going to Miami again. ¡Ojalá (que) yotuvieratantodinerocomoél! I wish I had as much money as he does!
