Exploring Feudal Obligations: Dialogue and Reflection on Serfdom
In this assignment, you will work with a partner to create a brief dialogue that explores the dynamics of loyalty and obligation under feudalism, specifically focusing on one of two scenarios: a lord questioning his vassal’s loyalty or a serf confronting his lord over unsatisfactory conditions. Additionally, reflect on the experience of being a peasant in medieval Western Europe. Consider whether you would willingly choose serfdom, evaluating the advantages and disadvantages involved in such a life.

Homework MA #4 due Monday
Group Activity #1 • Working with your partner, create a brief dialogue around one of the two following topics: • Lord & Vassel: The Lord has reasons to question his vassal’s loyalty to him because he suspects the vassal may have also pledged his loyalty to another lord. • Lord & Serf: A serf, who is unhappy with his or her circumstances, confronts his/her lord. Make sure to discuss the duties that both individuals in your dialogue owe to one another in Feudalism and Manorialism!
Group Activity #2 If you had been a peasant in Western Europe during the Middle Ages, would you have willingly agreed to become a serf? Why or why not? Consider the advantages and disadvantages of serfdom in your response. Write one paragraph for this question.
