  2. Introduction • 2005 – Major Changes to Recycling Program • Single stream • Phased in automated collection • Added seven new materials • City collects recyclables in City owned and operated trucks • Service provided to 160,000 homes

  3. Why We Needed Partners • City prioritized funding for containers • City prioritized funding for operations • City did not prioritize funding for education and marketing • City had $30,000 in budget

  4. What Did We Do? • Added education dollars to City contracts • Processing Services Contract • Container Bid • Solicited Corporate Partners

  6. Our Partners • Aluminum Can Council (Curbside Value Partnership) • Coca Cola • Dex • Denver Newspaper Agency • 9News • KHOW 630 am • Waste Management Recycle America (contract) • Rehrig Pacific (contract) • Denver Department of Environmental Health

  7. How Did We Solicit Partners • Tried to find mutually beneficial relationships • Asked for what we needed • Laid out what we could offer • Tried to highlight the benefits • Asked what they wanted • Offered a Proposal • Usually set up through informal MOU

  8. Partnership with ACC • City very pleased with partnership • ACC offered funding and promotional support • City returned data (still completing) and featured Aluminum Can in a number of marketing efforts

  9. A Few Highlights • Advertisements with aluminum can featured • Public service announcement featuring the Mayor tossing an aluminum can into recycling bin • Truck signs – 23 trucks with aluminum can featured • Aluminum cans are featured in all of our material specific pieces recycle guides, calendars audit cards, display panels, sample recycle bins and props • Aluminum specific flyers in education bag delivered with carts
