  3. A bit more historical information • Elizabethan society was much different to today: it was Patriarchal. • Men ruled every aspect of life and had complete control over the women in their family. Women would not dare disobey: they would be disowned and have nowhere to go. • Women stayed at home. They were not educated and did not work. • Once a marriage had been consummated, the wedding vows were sacred and the woman belonged to the man. Linking this to the story …

(Remember to use examples to justify your answers!) • Juliet is disrespectful towards her parents for “giving thanks” to Paris’ marriage proposal. • Juliet is a heroine and Romeo is a coward. • Romeo and Juliet’s behaviour is typical teenage behaviour.

Act 4 • Freytag’s Pyramid: Falling Action = the unravelling of the plot, often with some suspense. • What happens in this act? • Scene 1: Friar Lawrence has a cunning plan. • Scene 2: Juliet agrees to marry Paris. • Scene 3: The Friar’s plan is put into action. • Scene 4: Juliet and Paris’ wedding day dawns. • Scene 5: Oops, there’s a spanner in the works.
