  1. What sort of things are really “sacrifices” ? What is the point of doing them? The Mass as Sacrifice

  2. What does it mean to “sacrifice”? Use the pink bubble below. Give an example of a sacrifice, and explain what it is for. What did Jesus sacrifice? For what? **Could Jesus have done this without suffering? Why/ why not? The Mass as Sacrifice • To define sacrifice • To explain why the Mass is a sacrifice • To evaluate why it is important to sacrifice to God. The Law of Sacrifice To give up something of value, something that it hurts you to give, for something else of even more value.

  3. Why did Jesus have to suffer, to free us from sin? What did it prove? Think of 2 reasons. • It was God’s will • It’s the law of sacrifice: to give up something that it hurts to give • to prove how much God loves us • he had to take on evil, and sin: that meant suffering • Jesus had to take the punishmentfor our sins • Write down 3 of the best reasons why Jesus had to suffer. You may not agree with all of them! • Choose one of the reasons and explain why it is important. • **Do you think it is true to say that God was punishing Jesus for our sins?

  4. TO GIVE THANKS TO GOD TO SAY SORRY TO OBEY JESUS Jesus only suffered once. But in mass, we offer Jesus’ sacrifice up to God– again. Why?

  5. If Jesus sacrificed himself, freely, in love to God, Christians should too. Which of these pictures shows the most loving self-sacrifice?

  6. Why is sacrifice part of worship ? Jesus told us to sacrifice Him. God enjoys human sacrifice We enjoy human sacrifice A pure sacrifice thanks and honours God We want to obtain God’s forgiveness A blood sacrifice done freely, in love, shows the greatest love

  7. Homework Research, or find a youtube clip to find out about Fr. Maximilian Kolbe, (a prisoner in the concentration camp in Auschwitz in 1941. He is an example of someone who offered his life to save someone else). 1. Describe in your own words what he did. 2. Explain the similarities and differences between the sacrifice Jesus made and Fr. Maximilian Kolbe made.
