Essay Question: Were the people of Mesopotamia civilized? • Introduction (approximately 6 sentences) • Include historical and geographical background information on your topic • The last sentence of the introduction is the thesis statement • 2-3 Body Paragraphs (approximately 5-10 sentences EACH) • Each paragraph begins with a topic sentence • Provide details that support the thesis statement • Conclusion (approximately3 sentences) • 1st sentence: Restate the thesis using different words • Add about 2 sentences that summarize the main points from your essay

General Tips • Don’t use “I” or “you” in a Social Studies essay. EVER! • Don’t write: “I think the Tigris River played an important role in the development of Mesopotamia” • Don’t write: “As you can see, the Tigris River was very important in the history of Mesopotamia. • DO take your time on the essay and don’t rush to be the first one finished. Take a few minutes to brainstorm your ideas before you start writing • Be careful of spelling and grammar.
