  2. Oscar De La Hoya • Was born in February 4, 1973 in Los Angeles, CA. • Oscars Mother and Father came to the USA from Mexico before Oscar was born.

  3. Boxing tradition • Is a tradition in his family. • Grandfather, Vicente, a 126-pound amateur in the 1940s, and his father 1940s Joel, Sr. • Oscar’s father boxes professionally in the 60’s.

  4. Oscar’s boxing • At the age 6 Oscar started boxing. • He started boxing because he was bullied by other kids. • Started to go to the gym so he could learn to defend himself.

  5. Weight Class • At age 15 Oscar won the National Junior Olympic weight class of 119 lbs. • Won National Golden Gloves title in 1990 for the 125 lbs. class

  6. Weight Class • With his victory in the 1991 U.S. Amateur Boxing tournament at 132lb. He was named Boxer of the Year.

  7. The Olympics • In 1992 Oscar trained for the Olympic games. • He trained in Barcelona, Spain • When Oscar won the Olympic gold medal he dedicated it to his mother who died in 1990 of Breast Cancer.

  8. “The Golden Boy” • After Oscar’s Barcelona winning many fans started to call Oscar “THE GOLDEN BOY”. • He was known for his powerful left hand.

  9. Oscar’s Amateur Career • Oscar’s record of wins were 223 and only 5 losses. • He had 163 knockouts.

  10. Oscar Professional Career • Turned professional after winning the Olympics. • Won world crowns at 130,135,140,147 and 154lbs

  11. Other interests • Oscar started singing Spanish songs at the age of seven. • His first album,” Oscar was successful. • The album topped billboard’s Latin charts. • He was also nominated for a Grammy.

  12. Oscar De La Hoya • He is regarded as one of the best fighters in the world. • He is one of the most recognized and likeable athletes in the world today.
