  2. The Need For Authority Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Command – Matthew 28:20, Luke 13:3; cf. Luke 10:16 Example – Philippians 3:17, Acts 20:7 Necessary Inference – Matthew 22:23-32, Hebrews 10:25

Authority For Singing • Ephesians 5:18-19 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, • Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

  4. What About Mechanical Instruments? • Where is the command, example or necessary inference? • It doesn’t exist, so a Scriptural argument in favor of mechanical instruments cannot be made. • Instead • God didn’t say NOT to use them, and we have liberty in the silence of the Scriptures.

  5. The Old Testament • Deuteronomy 4:2 You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you. • Deuteronomy 5:32-33 “Therefore you shall be careful to do as the Lord your God has commanded you; you shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. 33 You shall walk in all the ways which the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong yourdays in the land which you shall possess. Deuteronomy 12:32 “Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it. Isaiah 8:20 To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there isno light in them.

  10. Does God accept all worship sincerely offered? • Cain – Genesis 4 • Nadab and Abihu – Leviticus 10:1-2 • Uzziah – 2 Chronicles 26:16-20 • John 4:24, Matthew 15:9

Vain Worship Playing of mechanical instruments of music Instruments of music were introduced into worship nearly 700 years after the church was established.  It was first encouraged by Pope Vitalian in 666 A.D. of the apostate Roman Catholic Church.  However, it was not generally practiced until the ninth century.  The practice of using instruments in worship was long resisted through the 12th century even in the apostate church.  Even the Greek Orthodox Catholic church still refuses to use instrumental music.

  12. Vain Worship Playing of mechanical instruments of music • John Calvin (Presbyterian) - “no more suitable than burning incense.” • Martin Luther (Lutheran) - “a work of Baal.” • John Wesley (Methodist) - “no objection to instruments of music, as long as they are neither seen nor heard.”
