  2. Theme: • The violent and roaring sea • Loss and death. • Lamentation for a thing that’s done. • Satisfaction.

  3. The tragic theme Riders to the Sea brings out the utter tragedy of humanity, pitted against the violent force of a raging sea. It is both provider and destroyer; it provides life, connection with the mainland, but it takes life.

  4. The main theme of the play The power of the sea is the main theme of the play: it is both provider and destroyer; it provides life, connection with the mainland, but it takes life.

  5. Theme of loss and death

  6. Both pieces deal with the theme of loss. Riders to the Sea tells the story of an impoverished Irish fishing family and their grief over losing the last of their men to the cruel ocean that ironically also sustains them.
