  1. Maths Methods U3&4OrientationNovember2013

  2. Areas of studies • Functions & graphs • Algebra • Calculus • Probability

  3. 3 Outcomes • Outcome 1 Define & explain key concepts as specified in the contents from the areas of study, and apply a range of related mathematical routines and procedures. • Outcome 2 Apply mathematical procedures in non-routine contexts, and analyse and these applications of mathematics. • Outcome 3 Select and appropriately use technology to develop mathematical ideas, produce results and carry out analysis in situations requiring problem- solving, modelling or investigative techniques or approaches.

  4. Your study score • 4 SACs (34%) • 2 End of Year Exams (66%)

  5. School Assessed Course • 4 SACs primarily to be completed after school • A quick view of SACs

  6. Exams

  7. Requirements • Essential Maths Methods Cas • A CAS calculator to be brought to ALL lessons • One binder book for class notes • Several binder books for completion of set exercises from text book • One display folder (20 pockets) for SACs to be submitted by the end of week 2

  8. Work strategies • The outcome list for each chapter – the MINIMUM number expected. • Asking for help • from teachers • from peers • Attending Maths club on Thursdays

  9. Useful resources • Additional resources: • Revision chapters • Other text books • Cambridge VCE Check points • VCE Study Notes • Past SACs • VCAA past papers • Useful links: www.virtualnerd.com

  10. Want an ‘S’ not ‘N’? • Attend at least 80% of lessons • Complete at least 80% set tasks • Achieve a “Satisfactory” for each of the three outcomes to get an “S” for the unit

  11. Can’t attend a SAC? • Need to bring a medical certificate

  12. Fail to achieve 40% in an outcome test? • Resit • Report sent home

  13. Fail to complete set work on time • Report sent home • Work to be presented on an alternative day by negotiation

  14. Ex 2A Q4 A group of hikers is to travel x km by bus at an average speed of 48 km/h to an unknown destination. They then plan to walk back along the same route at an average of speed of 4.8 km/h and to arrive back 24 hours after setting out in the bus. If they allow 2 h for lunch and rest, how far must the bus take them?
