Cambodian People • During years of battle in South East Asia, the United States bombs and kills over half a million Cambodians (1969-73) • After years of Genocide (1975-79) by the Pol Pot regime of the Khmer Rouge nearly a Third of all Cambodians were murdered • Pol Pot wanted to destroy all opposition and strike fear into the Cambodian people • Intellects, doctors, religious leaders, and important people are killed to establish control • Socio-economic impact would be felt till today

Cambodian People • 1994 Cambodia’s 7 million mines amount to two for every single Cambodian child, and between 200 and 250 people become victims every month. • 1995 The Khmer Rouge was ousted in Cambodia after a 3 year reign of terror in which hundreds of thousands died. • 1999 Aug 11, It was reported that an estimated half of Cambodia's 10-20 thousand sex workers were infected with the AIDS virus, HIV. • 2005 Some 80% of Cambodians lived in the countryside.
Areas of Suffering • Sanitation is a huge problem and many sewage systems are not available • Bird Flu is a huge epidemic right now and Cambodian people are unaware of how to fight it • Safe Sex is not taught and the people don’t understand how STDs work • School Systems are few and far between and education is not happening • Political corruption and murder is happening everywhere without a way to stop it
What We Can Do • Raise funds forany of these causes • Jointly raise awareness of issues • Work closely with Cambodian relief organizations specializing in establishing working school systems • Fund student trips to Cambodia to allow them to do service projects such as setting up sanitation systems or building houses • Create safe sex materials or fund safe sex learning in Cambodia • http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2003/09/0912_030912_tvtrashdump.html
How To • Do a fundraiser through different organizations on campus • Find an action group in Cambodia that can be trusted and we can work closely with • Find students interested in helping or possibly going to Cambodia • Establish a service project that will be carried on for several years • Possibly work through our government in a way that our actions will be effective
