This update highlights the ongoing efforts in collecting student enrolment and achievement data from Private Higher Education Institutions (PHEIs) through the Higher Education Quality Committee Information System (HEQCIS). PHEIs are required to submit data biannually, with deadlines on June 15 and December 15. The update includes statistics on current submissions, institutions registered with Edu Dex, and notes on a hands-on workshop for first-time HEQCIS users scheduled for October 23, 2012. HEQCIS • Purpose: Collecting student enrolment and achievement data • Submission of data from PHEIs used to populate NLRD • HEQCIS maintained by SAQA on behalf of CHE • Three-part application / submission • Edu.Dex License • Complete Qualification Template / inform HEQCIS • Upload Student Data according to specifications
HEQCIS (cont) • PHEIs = required to submit to HEQCIS biannually • 15 June and 15 December • CHE reports annually to DHET – which institutions have submitted during each submission cycle (as per req of NQF and HE Acts) • Current cycle 16 June 2012 – 15 December 2012
HEQCIS (cont) • Currently… • 134 institutions are registered to use Edu.Dex • 125 institutions have submitted qualification templates • 93 institutions have made one full data load (79%), whereas only 79 institutions have successfully loaded for a second time • 131 128 learners with 135 563qualification uptake results (26 049achievements + 93 485 enrolments) (a further 16 029 were shown as de-enrolled)
HEQCIS (cont) • Current cycle…(as of 16 June 2012) • 79 institutions (i.e. 68% of all unique PHEIs) had successfully submitted at least one full data load • 117 612 learners with 124 631 qualification uptake results (21 504 achievements + 88 387 enrolments) (a further 14 740 were shown as de-enrolled). • Learner increased by 52 219 + total qualification uptake result increase by 53 727 • Every time an institution loads any data to the HEQCIS, it submits its entire dataset.

PHEI IS Systems Development • Purpose: collect additional information about PHEIs • Need for centralised database of information on PHEIs similar to HEMIS for research, comparison at both national and international level, reporting purposes • Multiple systems have been considered as data sources for this project: HEQC-online, HEQF-online, DHET audit reports, DHET annual survey, HEQCIS • Technical sub-team will propose amendments to the current HEQCIS data requirements to effect maximum data capture with minimal disruption to the on-going institutional processes • Data may include additional institutional and student info, and staff info
