  1. Developing a Graduate Teaching Course to Improve Undergraduate Science Laboratories Caralyn Zehnder Lori Robinson Emily Parrish

  2. Every year, approximately 1,500 students, the majority of them non-science majors, enroll in introductory biology and environmental science courses. Graduate assistants teach the majority of our introductory biology and environmental science labs.

  3. Objective: to increase the guidance available to our GAs in order to make them better instructors. This will then lead to improvements in the undergraduate learning experience for undergraduates enrolled in core science classes.

  4. What we’ve done: • Developed a graduate level ‘Teaching Techniques’ course (BIOL 6950: Teaching Techniques). • Taught fall 2009. • 17 biology graduate students and two MAT students enrolled in the course.

  5. Developing effective lectures (practice & feedback). Discussions: Teaching Techniques(McKeachie) Practice writing effective quiz and test questions.

  6. SALG - Results As a result of your work in this class, what GAINS DID YOU MAKE in your UNDERSTANDING of each of the following?

  7. Student responses: “I know that if I want my students to be enthusiastic then I need to make my lectures interesting and use lots of different media and examples to engage them” “I learned how to become a better teacher and how to deliver material in a more effective manner.” Class participation is key to engaging the students!!!!

  8. As a result of your work in this class, what GAINS DID YOU MAKE in the following SKILLS?

  9. Please comment on what SKILLS you have gained as a result of this class. “Better material delivery, better presentations, how to address students questions more effectively, and how to address special situations properly.” “I think that by hearing others opinions I have learned a little about all aspects. I will take all of this into consideration for next semester.” “The skills I obtained for administering effective test and being able to present topics clearly were much needed.”

  10. As a result of your work in this class, what GAINS DID YOU MAKE in the following

  11. As a result of your work in this class, what GAINS DID YOU MAKE in the following “Teaching is more than just giving out material and giving exams, quizzes, etc. As teachers, we are instructing future lawyers, doctors, businessmen, etc. Therefore, teachers and teaching play an extremely important role in society.” “Having your peers evaluate and guide your teaching is a very big plus. Learning how to involve students in discussions is also extremely helpful.”

  12. What will you CARRY WITH YOU into other classes or other aspects of your life? “I know I need to apply the concepts, but also it is hard to devote so much effort when you are also a full time student as well.” “Better presenter and presentations, as well as a more confident public speaker” “How to present topics, how to engage students, how to involve students in lectures, how to create effective test and quizzes. Overall this class was extremely helpful for me if I want to advance in a career in teaching”

  13. Planning on teaching the course again next fall.
