  1. Physical & Chemical Changes Earth Science Intro Unit

  2. I will be able to describe and identify physical and chemical properties of matter. What are Physical Changes of Matter? • Physical Property- 1.A characteristic of a substance that can be observed and measured without changing the identity of the substance. 2. Use all your senses • Examples • Color • Size • Shape • Boiling point • Texture • Melting point • Mass • Magnetic attraction • Volume • Malleability • State of matter (solid, liquid, gas) • Solubility • Electrical conductivity • Density

  3. I will be able to describe and identify physical and chemical properties of matter. What are Physical Changes of Matter? Chemical Property- 1.Describes a substances ability to change into a new substance with different properties. 2.Some common chemical properties are: a. Flammability – ability to burn b. Reactivity – baking soda and vinegar c. Rust - reacts with oxygen d. Ripening of fruit

  4. I will be able to describe the differences between chemical and physical changes of matter. What are Physical Changes of Matter? Physical Change: 1. A physical properties is changed from one form to another. a. During a physical change the shape, size or appearance of an object may be altered. b. The chemical make-up of the substance is not changed.

  5. I will be able to describe the differences between chemical and physical changes of matter. What are Physical Changes of Matter? Chemical Change: 1. Occur when one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties. 2. Chemical changes result in NEW substances, physical changes do not. • Signs that indicate a Chemical Change. • 1. Production of an odor • 2. Production of a gas • Fizzing / foaming • 3. Changes in temperature • Endothermic – absorbs heat (feels colder) • Exothermic – gives off heat (feels hotter)

  6. I will be able to identify if the following objects are chemical or physical changes of matter. Chemical Chemical Or Or Physical Physical Change? Change? Chemical Physical
