The Basics • Follow-up to Project Tumkur ’03 • Under the auspices of NUSPS Essential Medicines Project & supported by Youth Expedition Project, Singapore International Foundation • Tumkur, Karnataka State, India • Date: 10th to 31st Dec 2004 • Healthcare and Refurbishment • Not a community service project, but a Service-Learning one • Leader: Kuang Jingkai • Facilitator: Farinah Begum Houmayune

  3. Basic Framework • Introduction to elementary school kids of the following issues • Personal Hygiene • Nutrition for children • Prevention of common diseases, eg. Diarrhoea, Malaria • Environmental Awareness • Basic First Aid

  4. Basic Framework • Refurbishment of School Classrooms • Repainting of Classrooms • Simple Repairs • Painting of Wall Murals with Health Themes • Cultural Exchange through School Visits and Simple Presentations • Short Educational tours

  5. Objectives • We hope that every participant would return with these knowledge: • A better awareness of yourself and the things around us • Life skills that can be applied in many situations • That YEPs are not just meant to render aid but also to empower the people we are helping

  6. Differences from Tumkur ’03 • Largely the same framework • School instead of slum • Experience from Tumkur ’03 will be applied, making our presentations’ contents more relevant to the local context • Replacement of Tree-planting with Classroom Refurbishment

  7. Are you THE ONE? • Youths aged 17-25 • Team Player • Commitment level • Yearning to experience life in an unfamiliar environment • Desire to pick up Service-Learning skills that can be applied in other areas • Bonus: Useful Skills

  8. Timeline • Now till end of Semester • Recruitment of ExCo members • Weekly/ Fortnightly Meetings & Discussions • Jun – Jul • Recce Trip • Preparation Courses • Jul – Aug • Recruitment during Matriculation Fair and FOWs • Final confirmation of Project scope

  9. Timeline • Aug – late Oct • Recruitment • Fund-raising • Local Training • Publicity • Late Nov – Early Dec • Final Preparations • Dec • Actual Project

  10. Costs • SIF Subsidy of 60% of individual cost or S$900, whichever is lower • Estimated cost: S$700
