This project aims to create an interactive installation that transforms images into sound, engaging viewers through a multi-modal experience. By researching haptic technology and experimenting with the natural relationships between image, sound, and touch, I plan to develop a prototype in collaboration with musicians and music technology students. Insights from literature on causality, chaos theory, and sensory perception will inform the installation's design. The ultimate goal is to encourage deep sensory exploration and interaction, bridging the gap between various forms of perception.

Origins of Design Concept • I have always been interested in the transformation of image into sound • I want to create an Interactive Installation that is multi-modal • I want this installation to engage the viewer • I recently decided to look at using touch
Examples of Background Reading • www.seeingwithsound.com • Mind Hacks by Tom Stafford • Numerous Articles on Causality & the Chaos Theory • The Phantom / Haptic Device • The Stroop Effect • www.sensable.com ( Siggraph 2004 )
Empirical Work • Spoke to several lecturers and Researchers about the technology I could use • Planning to work with Musicians and Music Tech students for my prototype • I have carried out simple experiments relating to image and sound • Going to be working with Nicola from the IDC
Situation Today • I am currently finished the first stage of my preliminary research and reading • I am working on my prototype • I am still researching haptics and the technology I will use for my prototype • I am constantly looking at other Artists and Designers
My Objective • To design an Interactive Installation • The images I will work with will be physical images • I intend to work with the natural relationship between image, sound & touch • I want to engage the viewer and encourage the viewer to explore their senses
The Stroop Effect • Do not read the words rather say the colour of the words Try it!
Haptics & The Phantom • The Sensable Technologies PHANTOM product line of haptic devices makes it possible for users to touch and manipulate virtual objects • www.sensable.com
Technological Requirements • Still Resarching different possibilities • Programming • Haptics? • Looking into using Director or Flash for Prototype
Planned Schedule of Activities • First two to three prototypes and research into technology finished for June • June - August refining my prototype and writing first draft of my thesis • August - September finishing thesis, perfecting prototype and working on presentation of Installation • DAWN
Major Concerns • Technology - programming ?? • Time Frame • Access to neccessary equipment • My knowledge of Science!
Issues for Discussion • Is there a natural Relationship between Image and sound? • What are your thoughts on the relationship between image and touch? • Any suggestions in terms of technology?
