  1. Reasons for Availing of Non-Emergency Assistance

  2. A walk-in clinic offers a very broad category of medical facilities that accept patients on a walk-in basis and with no appointment required. The walk-in clinic in Mississauga will be able to meet the unmet demand for timely, affordable care for minor complaints. Some physicians are critical of these clinics, for skimming off uncomplicated care, for not having a longstanding relationship with their patients and for not being skilled enough to recognize when a more advance care is needed. Here is a summary of these walk-in clinic positions which should serve as a guide in deciding when and whether to receive cares at such clinics:

  3. For selected, “low-acuity conditions” like poison ivy or a sore throat, a walk-in clinic is similar to traditional doctor’s offices. But for cases like chest pain and fainting spells, definitely, a specialist is a priority. • Walk-in clinics are an acceptable alternative “for relatively healthy patients without a complex medical history”. If you suffer from diabetes, coronary artery disease and a touch of emphysema, go to your doctor who knows your medical history who’s equipped to evaluate how your current symptoms relate to your other problems. • You should make sure the walk-in clinic clearly discloses its “scope of clinical services” to know what they can do and what they can’t do. If they are shady about this scope, go somewhere else. • If you are going to a walk-in clinic, let your primary care physician know. It’s best to have a referral from him if you are needing a more advanced care. • Don’t use walk-in clinics for the long-term management of chronic diseases. Get to see a primary care physician to follow up with you, to lower your blood sugar or your blood pressure controlled.

  4. Walk-in clinics are places often referred to as “minor emergency rooms” or “doc-in-a-box” outfit. Their proposition is simple: You don’t need an appointment, the cost is “reasonable” and much more transparent than usual medical care in a doctor’s office, emergency room, or hospital. And best of all, they can treat a majority of acute conditions and have you in and out in under an hour. These clinics, have a tremendous advantage over emergency departments. They can cherry pick patients who can pay cash or got a private insurance. They are often equipped to take X-rays, perform blood tests, set casts and suture wounds, but not designed to handle major emergencies. Patients with serious trauma and life-and-limb- threatening conditions are referred to a hospital emergency room. Walk-in clinics are usually open during evenings and weekends, with no appointments needed. Typically less expensive and shorter wait times, usually less than 30 minutes.
