  3. Training and Development in the NWHB • Learning and Development Unit • Supports for Life long learning • Management Development training • Health and Safety • Nursing Development • Support Services • General Training

  4. Need for Equality Training in the NWHB • Changing needs of population • Changing needs of staff • Requests from Staff/ Clients/ Unions • Equality Legislation/ Government policy • Need for improvement of Service/ Employment practice

  5. NWHB Equality and Diversity Management training • 4 day training course • Managing Equality and Diversity • Ethnic Diversity and Anti-Racism • Training in Traveller Culture • Disability Awareness • Service managers/ Line managers • Certification on only completion of all training days

  6. Cont. • Training delivered by internal/ external tutors • 2 training cohorts per annum • Identify action/ issue which needs to be changed/ addressed • Evaluate in 6 months/ One year

  7. Aim of the training To increase the capacity of staff to manage diversity and equality in employment and in the planning and provision of services and contribute to tackling health inequalities through enhanced information, understanding and knowledge.

  8. Management Commitment • Part of overall Equality Strategy • Employment of Equality Officer • Policies/ Procedures/ Charters • Equal Status Review • Recruitment Audit • Equality Based research • Awareness raising • Information, advocacy and support

  9. Moving from Equality to Diversity? • Don’t lose sight of equality • “Diversity” does not address inequalities • Equality and Diversity need to go hand in hand

  10. Enhancing performance through training? • Training alone does not change inequalities or discriminatory behaviour • Needs to be part of an overall strategy to promote equality and accommodate diversity • Incorporate other related events/actions

  11. Fostering a culture of accomodating equality and diversity • High profile awareness raising events • Integrated working/ learning/ social events • Equality Charter/ Committee • Corporate/ Senior management/ Union statements • Media/ Information Campaigns • Advocacy networks
