  1. RAVE status report Matthias Steinmetz (AIP)

  2. Data collection • 325k spectra for 280k stars (Jan 09) (see Fred‘s talk) • Data reduction up to date (March 09) (see Mary‘s talk) 2009 RAVE collaboration meeting - Padova

  3. Data collection 2009 RAVE collaboration meeting - Padova

  4. Data collection 2009 RAVE collaboration meeting - Padova

  5. Data quality • DR3 close to be ready for publication • Continues need to better understand data quality • Calibration observations • Reduction of scatter • Understanding (and correcting) systematics • Comparison between RAVE and SDSS 2009 RAVE collaboration meeting - Padova

  6. Auxiliary catalogues • Proper Motions (Roeser) • Distances (Breddels) • Individual Abundances (Boeche) • Calibration stars • Stellar rotation velocities • … 2009 RAVE collaboration meeting - Padova

  7. RAVE photometry • So far mainly IR: DENIS and 2MASS • Already the 1st scan of skymapper will provide multiband photometry in the optical for all RAVE stars • Can we prepare this with SDSS photometry in the survey overlap regions? 2009 RAVE collaboration meeting - Padova

  8. RAVE science • A number of science papers appeared • One from outside of the collaboration • Only a few on key science areas of RAVE 2009 RAVE collaboration meeting - Padova

  9. Status of AAO • AAO contract (UK/Australia) ends on 30 June 2010 – currently the formal end of RAVE MoU • Positive funding decision for AAO by Australian Government 2010-2020 • Revised MoU required. First draft to be discussed in September • Terms similar to existing MoU • More specific on performance goals • RAVE intent: continue operation toward 1M spectra (mid 2012?) 2009 RAVE collaboration meeting - Padova

  10. Status of UKST hardware • 6 weeks loss of operation in 2007 owing to asbestos removal • Poor availability of fibres for 2005-2008 (average ~100 fibres), in particular in 2008 • Fibre quality deteriorating • FP2 now beyond repair • Successful FP3 commissioning in Mar 09 • FP1 refurbished to 100 fibres • FP2 under remodelling, new fibre bundle • FP1 remodelling after FP2 rework is completed • 3 fully equipped FP by 2010 2009 RAVE collaboration meeting - Padova

  11. RAVE finances • Currently RAVE operation is secured to mid 2010 • We would need about 600k€ to continue until mid 2012 • Model: 50% from collab, 50% new partners • Discussion with potential new partners • Basic model: access for 1 faculty + 1 postdoc + grad students = entrance fee of 100k€ • Martin Asplund • Tim Beers • ANU • We need some cash!!! 2009 RAVE collaboration meeting - Padova

  12. RAVE acknowledgement • Funding for RAVE has been provided by: the Anglo-Australian Observatory; the Astrophysical Institute Potsdam; the Australian National University; the Australian Research Council; the French National Research Agency; the German Research foundation; the Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica at Padova; the Johns Hopkins University; the W.M. Keck foundation; the Macquarie University; the Netherlands Research School for Astronomy; the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada; the Slovenian Research Agency; the Swiss National Science Foundation; the Science & Technology Facilities Council of the UK; Opticon; Strasbourg Observatory; and the Universities of Groningen, Heidelberg and Sydney. 2009 RAVE collaboration meeting - Padova
