Suggestions for Teaching Skills That Promote Good Writing • Assign writing in a variety of subjects and modes. • Occasionally allow students to select their own topics. • Expect students to plan their writing and work through several drafts. • Practice writing skills in the course of learning other subjects. • Incorporate writing into assignments throughout the year. • Focus on quality while improving grammar, spelling, and punctuation. • Encourage students to read, write and discuss work at home. • The more students are allowed to write, using a variety of formats, the better they will write during testing sessions. • Periodically have students produce a piece of writing within a designated time period.

  3. Papers Not Scored • No response or just a restatement of the task • Response in a language other than English • Response that is illegible or incomprehensible • Response about a topic different from the assigned task

Guidelines for Student Responses • Address each part of the topic of the prompt. • Stay on topic throughout the development of a written response. • Make sure that supporting details or examples are used that are • fully developed and • connected with the topic in ways that will be clear to the reader
