  2. Duties/Responsibilities • Purpose: to improve the general health status of the Navajo people through direct home health care and to provide community and client health education in coordination with Tribal, State and Federal Programs.

  3. Community Health Workers Provide the following: • Provide health education & health screenings • Assist with referrals for needed assistance • Serve as interpreters • Provide personal and homemaker services

  4. Community Health Workers Provide the following: • Take vital signs • Provide simple dressing • Monitor Medication • Collaboration for greater resources • Provide quarterly report to community

  5. Responsbility of NBCS • In home surveys and assessment (new CHERSs) • Outreach to communities and recruitment (CHRs) • Dissemination of the project information and findings (CHRs) • Helping to ensure cultural appropriateness of the study • Building research capacity for NDOH • The CHRs are uniquely suited for this role

  6. Certification • Certified Nursing Assistants • Certified First Responders • CPR • Food Handler Permit • Public Health Certificate • NIMS • HIPAA/Computer Awareness

  7. Benefits to Navajo Nation • Developing research capacity within NDOH • Increasing intergraton with NN EPA and awareness on environmental health • Direct communication with tribal leadership • 7 new jobs with NDOH • Partnership on new grant opportunities (four new grant pending) • CHERS can train CHRs in research methods • Helps to ensure sustability of the NBCS

  8. Roles for New CHERS • Receive human research training • Adminsiter consent and in-home surveys and developmental assessments • Liason with Navajo EPA and research team • Supplment community education • Communicate study information to tribal staff and community members
