  1. Renewable Power associated Infrastructure as a Service Andrew Mackarel HEAnet, Ireland Alin Pastrama NORDUnet, Denmark Pau Minoves i2CAT Foundation, Spain Kim Khoa Nguyen, University of Québec, Canada Ward Van Heddeghem IBBT, Belgium Presented by: Andrew Mackarel HEAnet EUNIS 2011

  2. ICT Energy & Environment • Climate Change is not reversible • Urgently need to develop low carbon solutions • ICT are a major consumer of power (8% in the US) and CO2 production which is growing at 6% per year. 2% World Wide • The problemwe face requires not onlyEnergyEfficiencythough, but GHG Reductionusingrenewable sources • The Goal is to provide ICT Services with renewable energy i.e. changing the service • to where the infrastructure is powered by such sources.

  3. ICT Energy & Environment The current Internet BejingOlympic Data Center, 1,000,000 SqFt, 80 MVA LakesideTechnology Center, Chicago 1,100,000 SqFt, 100 MVA About 2,000 data centers over the world

  4. The GreenStar Network Solution How to keep IT service green? • Energy efficiency techniques • Data centers powered by renewable energy sources (i.e., hydroelectricity, solar, wind) • Separate infrastructure ownership and maintenance from usage • All-optical Core network • IT service is migrated around nodes when power dwindles • Virtualization and Cloud Computing must be implemented • Scalable & Flexible management for intermittent energy sources

  8. Mantychore and GSN • Mantychore-GSN collaboration has the objective to design necessary experiments and tests which eventually check the viability of the movement of services (virtual machines (VMs and applications)) using flexible device configuration utilities such as Infrastructure as a Service and Bandwidth on Demand solutions. • Perform the integration between MANTYCHORE and GSN and (physical integration between the GSN and the NRENs infrastructure and services integration).

  9. What can be virtualized? • Computing resources • Hypervisors: KVM, Xen, VMWare • Guest operating system: Linux (Ubuntu), Windows • Available templates: Desktop, Server 32 bit, Server 64 bits • Storage resources • iSCSI • NFS • Network resources • Layer 1: Argia • Layer 2: Ether • Layer 3: Mantychore • Network address assignment (DHCP server) • PDU resources • Raritan, ServerTech, APC , Avocent , Eaton • Power source resources • Solar power generator • Wind power generator • Climate resources • Raritan sensors

  10. Network Management Architecture

  11. Model Infrastructure as a Service in GSN WP7 Test Case Build Mantychore Infrastructure between GSN Hub and GSN nodes GSN Software Architecture Integrate GSN Controller and Mantychore Infrastructure to setup connectivity between nodes optimising solution of Renewable Energy sources

  12. Demonstrating IaaSTranscoding and video streaming service provision based on Follow the Sun and the Wind Video Streaming VM DLNA Server VM Transcoding Server

  13. Euro GSN Hub and Spokes • Summer 2011 - second stage of GSN and Mantychore Integration • Connect European GSN nodes together to a Euro GSN Hub • Develop integrated Mantychore – GSN solution Q3 and Q4 2011 • 2012 –Third stage of GSN and Mantychore Integration • Connect Euro Hub -> Canadian Hub • Test hub to hub interaction and switching IaaS to nodes at either hub

  14. HEAnet GSN Nodes

  15. NORDUnet GSN Node • Localization • Reykjavík, Iceland • Connectivity • 1GE transatlantic • Energy • 75% hydro • 25% geothermal • Hardware • Dell PowerEdge • Eaton ePDU • Cisco Catalyst • Juniper MX Source: www.landsvirkjun.com Source: www.or.is

  16. I2CAT GSN Node • Localization • RibaRoja del Ebre • Conectivity • Optical link • Solar panel • Capacity: 2000W • Switch and PDU configuration • Green energy • Manage the grid for maintenance and operation
