I.2 The use of the agricultural space • Surface area of 3240,4 ha: 2310,9 ha are used for agriculture • 3rd region in France (after the Centre and Midi-Pyrenées) • 3 parties: - forage field cultures (60%) -cereals, oilseed and fallows (31%) -vine,orchards,vegetable and flowers culture (9%) -the grass covers the half of the SAU (48%)

  4. I.3 The agricultural production I.3.a type of production • In 2005, most of the factors of production are in 29200 professionnal agricultural enterprises. • The half work in breeding (beef, cows or both) • The other work in the mixed-farming and in the specialized cultures

I.3.b The vegetable production • 6,5% of the french vegetable production • 1st region in France for horticulture • 1st producer of corn salad in France and in Europe • 2nd producer of apples • 3rd producer of vegetables • 3rd producer of wine • an important vegetable activity at the European level for the horticulture (in Anjou for example), the arboriculture, the viticulturist, the market gardening (in the region of Nantes) and eventually of the seeds.

I.3.c The animal production • 1st rank in the number of beefs and cows breeding which represent 13% of the number of beefs in France and 12%of the cows in France. • 2nd rank for the number of cows (for milk) which represents 13% of the national number • first producer of beef, of calves, of rabbits • second producer for pork and poultry. • second region after Britain for the economic value of the animal production (14,8% of the national number)

III General introduction of the agricultural employment III.1 In France • 751 154 employees and employers, either 3,5% of the working population • 419 600 employers, 120 466 employees, 86 871 seasonal contracts,8035 employees of ETA and CUMA • Viticulture: first employer of workforce • Stabilization of the employment • Increase of the seasonal employment (33% of the employment in 2005) • Decrease of the familial employment

  12. III.2 The Pays de la Loire • 72 884 full time employees (27% of UTA unit of agricultural work) • 582 creations of firms in 2003

  17. IV The different types of employment IV. 1 In single enterprise • Permanent or temporary workforce • The activities which employ the more are:the market gardening, the viticulture,the horticulture and the arboriculture • The mixed-farming and the breeding have the most permanent contracts

  22. V The employment in Maine et Loire • 12 000 full time jobs in 2004 • -7 % between 1998 and 2004 • 1st employer: arboriculture • Part of the permanent jobs: 20%. The mushroom beds have the most permanent contracts (87%) • An employee makes in average 500 hours of work each year • The wages: the minimum wage ( seasonal and low-skilled jobs) • Equality between women and men in the specialized cultures. There are more men in viticulture and mixed farming • 50% of the employees have less than 25 years old.

VI) Brief introduction of the agricultural organisations • ASAVAPA:Promotion of the jobs, of the men, to facilitate the exchanges, to inform and to make aware of the evolutions of the professional, economic, social and cultural life Actions: Reports,Meetings, Visits Run by a board of administration • FAFSEA: in house training Actions: Training Runned by representatives of the employers and employees trade unions
