This project focuses on creating a robot designed to address the significant issue of aluminum waste found in landfills. Since 1970, Americans have disposed of over 16 million tons of aluminum cans, with only one-third being recycled. The robot's objective is to locate aluminum soda cans among trash, crush them, and deposit them into designated bins. Utilizing a CMUcam1 for color detection and infrared sensors for navigation, we aim to enhance our design and capabilities in future iterations while promoting recycling awareness.

Summary of Talk • The Problem • Objective of Robot • Sensors • Future work
Introduction: The problem Landfills have lots of trash…. As can be seen However not all of it is trash! (people don’t recycle) • Since 1970 Americans have thrown away over 16 million tons of aluminum cans (so wasteful) • 2 out of every three beverage containers are notrecycled in the United States
Solution! Robot’s objective: Recycle! More specifically the robot will Search through “trash” and Pick up aluminum soda cans, Crush them and place/drop them in big blue.
Sensors The robot needs to be able to find soda cans. This will be accomplished using a CMUcam1 to detect the color of the cans (red). Also IR for object avoidance.
