  1. Objective: Construct effective closing sentences by using varied language to relate back to the subject and point from the topic sentence. 28 October 2013 English I Honors Do Now: Read the following sample body paragraph, and then select the best sentence from the following options to serve as the closing sentence. Edgar Allan Poe’s works are renowned for their unique ability to inspire fear within audiences through the skillful implementation of imagery. Within “The Cask of Amontillado,” Poe establishes an eerie setting, describing the Montressor family vaults as having “long walls of piled skeletons, with casks and puncheons intermingling, into the inner most recesses of the catacombs” (Poe 135). Images of death, decay, and wine subtly serve to reinforce the plot structure as the malevolent narrator uses the esteemed Amontillado to lure Fortunato to his untimely death. As the characters descend deeper into the catacombs, ‘the nitre… increases… hangs like moss upon the vaults… below the river’s bed… drops of moisture trickle among the bones’” (Poe 135). Macabre images paint a scene in the reader’s mind that reinforces the sinister tone and fear of impending death. Suspense builds as the plot progresses and the characters become more and more isolated within this dreary setting. A. Use of imagery to build a tone of suspense is Poe’s strong suit. B. Crafting images that lend a disconcerting air enable Poe to develop fear within his works. C. Carefully crafted images that elicit feelings of unease, and contribute to the development of suspense, distinguish Poe from his contemporaries. D.
