Spring 2007: NYU Commuter Student Services and Office of Research and Assessment surveyed approximately 1,000 commuter students
Identified  four challenges that affect commuter students 
Developed a holistic model of programs and services to address these challenges.
Summer 2007: Implementation of this program began

5. Disconnection from student life  Respondents seemed to be most satisfied with their academic experience (77% satisfied/highly satisfied), extracurricular activities (63%) and overall experience at NYU (66% satisfied/highly satisfied).  
However, when it comes to their satisfaction with community (59%), and connection to NYU (34%) they appear to be less satisfied with their experience.  
The factors that most often prevented respondents from being more involved were their commute (22%), the times which programs are held (21%), studying (21%) and work (17%).  
6. Scheduling Conflicts  Commuters are often on campus Monday-Friday between the hours of 9am-7pm
Most students hold between 0 (20%), 1 (53%) or 2 (24%) jobs, with most being part-time (on- or off-campus) and internships. 
7. Mass Transportation Issues  The most common means of transportation includes the subway, walking, bus or commuter rail
For a one-way commute, the majority of respondents spend an hour or less commuting (65%), while 30% spend between 1-2 hours each way, and 5% commuting for more than two hours each way 
8. Safety  Overall students feel safe traveling to and from NYU (74%)
However, they also made suggestions such as providing shuttles to subway stations and major transportation hubs and outer boroughs (31%) and increasing the visibility of Public Safety officers on the streets between NYU and subway stations (23%) during the late night hours

Small events intended to foster personal interaction between commuters
