  1. BULGARIAN INFLUENCE ON THE NETHERLANDS ALEXANDRA, KAYLEIGH, JANY, KAYLEE & ANNAV5A

  2. Introduction • We had to study what influence Bulgaria has had on the Netherlands in the past years • It was hard to find out which influences Bulgaria had on the Dutch economy, so we expanded our subject to the EU

  3. Entry of Bulgaria intothe EU • In 1995 Bulgaria sent in a requesttojoin the EU • The market had tobe open forcompetition • Bulgaria joined the EU on January the First of 2007

  4. Conditions • In the Netherlands therewerediscussionsabout the admittance of Bulgaria, notonly on higherpolitical levels, but alsowithin the society • A different problem was the influx of Bulgarian people to the Netherlands, caused by the fact that they didn’t have to ask for a visa • There are still discussions about potential cheap workforces, it might be an unfair competition to the Dutch labourers

  5. Afterwards • After six years, the European Commission concludes that Bulgaria should have never been allowed to join the EU • The most important conclusion was that the democracy in Bulgaria hadn’t improved enough • That Bulgaria was allowed to join the EU in 2007 was a result of political pressure. It was about redeeming a ‘debt of honour’ after the fall of the Berlin Wall

  6. MassMedia – Bulgaria • To understand the profound changes in the mass media system, one should go back to the fall of the Berlin Wall • The Communist Party dominated the functions of the State • The Bulgarian information system shows serious and structural problems, the situation has been getting worse

  7. MassMedia–TheNetherlands • The choice of media is more and more tailored to the individual preferences of users • The goal of the media policy of the Dutch government is that as many people as possible have access to an independent, varied and high-level choice of media

  8. Diplomatic Relations • The Dutch government had contact with the Bulgarian part of the Ottoman Empire even before the Bulgarian struggle for independence • On the 14th of June in 1909 the Dutch ambassador was appointed minister at the Bulgarian court. This was the first official diplomatic relation between the countries • Until 1965 there was no diplomatic Bulgarian post in the Netherlands, this was caused by the aftermath of an espionage affair • To this day both countries tied to each other with strong diplomatic relations

  9. AdditionalInformation • The Netherlands-Bulgarian association has existed since 1982 and aims to promote the friendly relations between the Netherlands and Bulgaria • The Netherlands mainly imports textiles and shoes from Bulgaria • The Netherlands exports many chemical products, transport means and yarn and fabric to Bulgaria NETHERLANDS-BULGARIAN ASSOCIATION IMPORT AND EXPORT

  10. AdditionalInformation • The Netherlands have no overly good balance against Bulgaria, the last soccer defeat was a month before the biggest European success of the Dutch team • On the 24th of May 1988 Bulgaria won in ‘De Kuip’ with 2-1 through goals from Luboslav, the current Bulgarian head coach and NikolayIlliev • A month later, the Netherlands captured the European title in Germany BULGARIA AGAINST THE NETHERLANDS
