  1. Product Design Lesson 1 – Lamination

  2. Lamination Sometimes it is not economical or suitable to use a solid wood in the production of a product. This is when a laminate may be more suitable. What is a laminate? A laminate is a material that is produced by bonding together two or more layers of material.

  3. Lamination What are the advantages? They are usually very stable, do not warp or misshape and are, in many instances, easier to work that solid woods. They come in sheet form, are easy to mark out and easy to cut and shape. Often cheaper than solid wood

  4. Lamination What are the disadvantages? Although often cheaper than solid wood the aesthetics may not be as good. The surfaces are often good enough for a final finish so may need to be finished with a veneer or paint to make then look good.

  5. Lamination What are they used for? They are often used in flat-pack furniture. However …. As the material is often relatively thin in these applications, you can’t use normal wood joining processes such as dovetail or finger joints. This is why knock-down fittings are usually used.
