  2. QCF developments in partnership • This presentation refers to Adult Social Care in England • We are also working with other Sector Skills Councils and Awarding Organisations

  3. Qualification Credit Framework (QCF) • A government initiative across England, Wales and Northern Ireland • It includes all vocational qualifications in all sectors • A replacement to the National Qualifications Framework (NQF)

  5. rules of combination • Each QCF qualification must have a set of rules of combination (RoC) defined by the Sector Skills Council (SSC) • The RoC specify any mandatory units and list the optional units within a qualification that a learner must achieve • Units can be included in more than one qualification, so for consistency they also include assessment requirements of particular units

  6. Types of qualifications • Entry into health and social care • Occupational competence • Continuous professional development (CPD)

  7. Qualifications for occupational competence: • Level 2 & 3 Diplomas in Health and Social Care • Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People’s Services • Level 3, 5 & 7 Diplomas in Commissioning, Procurement and Contracting for Care Services

Structure – Level 2/3 HSC Diploma Level 3 HSC Diploma: Level 2 HSC Diploma: Group A Mandatory Units + • Group A = 28 credits • Groups B and C = at least 30 credits • Total credits = 58 credits or more • Group A = 24 credits • Groups B and C = at least 22 credits • Total credits = 46 credits or more Group B Knowledge units: Generic Pathway Learning Disabilities Pathway Dementia Pathway + Group C Optional Competence Units

  9. L2 & 3 HSC Diploma Mandatory Units • 9 mandatory units covering: • Personal Development • Communication • Equality and Inclusion • Duty of Care • Role of Health and Social Care Worker • Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults • Person-Centred Support • Health and Safety • Handling Information

  12. Dementia qualifications Launched in Sept 2010 • Level 2 Award Awareness of Dementia (knowledge only) • Level 2 Certificate in Dementia Care • Level 3 Award Awareness of Dementia (knowledge only) • Level 3 Certificate in Dementia Care

Level 2 Award Awareness of Dementia (knowledge only and 8 credits) This is made up of 4 units: • Dementia Awareness • The person centred approach to the care and support of individuals with dementia • Understand the factors that influence communications and interaction with individuals who have dementia • Understand equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care

Level 3 Award- Awareness of Dementia (knowledge only and 11 credits) This is made up of 4 units: • Understand the process and experience of dementia • Understand the administration of medication to individuals with dementia using a person centred approach • Understand the role of communication and interactions with individuals who have dementia • Understand the diversity of individuals with dementia and the importance of inclusion

Level 2 Certificate in Dementia Care This is made up of 5 mandatory units (14 credits): • Dementia Awareness • Understand and implement a person centred approach to the care and support of individuals with dementia • Equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care practice • Understand and enable interaction and communication for individuals with dementia • Approaches to enable rights and choices for individuals with dementia whilst minimising risk plus optional units (4 credits minimum) from list

Level 3 Certificate in Dementia Care This is made up of 4 units (15 credits): • Understand the process and experience of dementia • Enable rights and choices for individuals with dementia whilst minimising risk • Understand and enable interaction and communication for individuals with dementia • Equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care practice Plus optional units (6 credits minimum) from list

  19. Flexibilities of the new qualifications Many units can be used in 3 different ways • as optional units within the HSC Diplomas • within smaller specialist qualifications for CPD • individual units to develop learning in bite sized chunks and reflect business need

Continuing Professional Development • Level 2 Award in Supporting Activity Provision in Social Care • Level 3 Certificate in Activity Provision in Social Care • Level 2 Certificate in Assisting and Moving Individuals for Social Care Settings • Level 3 Award in Inducting Others in the Assisting and Moving of Individuals in Social Care

Continuing Professional Development • Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Health and Social Care and Early Years and Childcare Settings (autumn 2011) • Level 2 Award in Promoting Food Safety and Nutrition in Health and Social Care and Early Years and Childcare Settings (autumn 2011) • Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Individuals with Diabetes (summer 2011)

  23. Mental Health Qualifications for CPD and occupational competence: • Level 2 and 3 Certificates in Community Mental Health (knowledge) • Level 3 Diploma in Working in Mental Health (Competence) • Level 2 Award in Understanding Working with People with Mental Health Issues (knowledge)

  24. Qualifications to support entry to the sector • L1 Award in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care • L1 Award and Certificate in Introduction to Health, Social Care and Children’s and Young People’s Settings • L2 and L3 Certificates in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care

  25. Other ongoing work • Seated Exercise • Sexuality • Stroke care • Further LD development e.g. autism units • Further units to be added to L5 diploma • End of Life • Infection Prevention and Control
