  3. Intended outcomes… • to utilize the Smart Recorder feature of the Smart Notebook Software to record lessons for students. • to take these videos and use them during differentiated instruction or flip the classroom. • to learn how to store and share these resources with others and your students.

  4. Why invest the time? What are the benefits? • It’s like having another teacher in the room! Students are listening to great instruction (that’s you!) • Students who need remediation, enrichment, or simply need to hear a lesson again have a chance to get their instruction meaningful and personalized. • Accountability…games provide only a superficial level of engagement and offer limited accountability or true engagement from the student. • Structured activity without them having to interrupt your table time with another group.

  5. Tools of the Trade • Rubicon Atlas, Smart Exchange, or personally made Smart Notebook Lessons. • SMART Recorder (optional: microphone and a quiet setting)

  6. Getting Started…. • You can use PowerPoints, online tutorials, videos, websites, Smart Notebook lessons, and much more and put it all together to create one easy lesson that can be controlled by the touch of one button! • Plan out your lesson, websites, videos, assessments, and materials you want your children to use. • Get to as quiet as of a place that you can get. Microphones can help and will make your voice clearer.

  7. The Smart Recorder Basics • Easily found in your system tray. Right click on the Smart Notebook icon. *You can pause but you can’t go back! *Keep going, if it bothers you, place it in MovieMaker and edit  *As soon as you press stop it prompts you to save it.

  9. Tips and Tricks • Open websites, videos, and resources you are ready to use and keep them in your tray at the bottom. • I usually choose “record desktop” it’s the easiest for me but lesson precise. The other two options begin immediately and don’t give you time to prepare yourself. • You can keep the video recorder at the top or in the system tray. • Pause in between changing resources or if you forget what you were going to say to make the end result more fluid. • While recording it will pick up any noises in the room, if you use a microphone it will reduce the background noises. • Teach like you are in front of a class! Read the key ideas, include your think-alouds and instructions.

  10. Let’s Practice! Instructor will model and show examples. Afterwards, you will have a chance to practice yourself!

  11. How to store… As soon as you press stop, the video will prompt you to save it. When the prompt comes up: Name your project, choose where you’d like to save your work (I suggest creating a folder on the desktop). *With computers failing all the time, it’s important to back up or purchase a small USB that you save your documents to so that all of your hard work isn’t deleted. You can also…save to Dropbox or SchoolFusion.

  12. How to Share… Dropbox Many people cringe when we say Dropbox but if you choose “share dropbox link” it makes a world of difference. Here’s how!

  13. How to Share… SchoolTube or TeacherTube Create a free account. I always make sure to choose the option where only people from my school can search and find the video. I like my videos private. Upload the video. This is important because it can give you an URL for the video which you can use to easily create a QR Code. Then students only need a mobile device and the code to access the lesson. Note that if you do it this way you need to make sure the video is formatted as an MP4 so that it can be viewed using the iPad. Always test it out before giving it to students.

  14. How to Share… Speaking of QR Codes… What are they? Similar technology as the UPC, it allows you to attach websites and short messages to a square scan able quick response code. What websites do you recommend? You can google QR Code Generator but here are two of my favorites: http://qrcode.kaywa.com/Kwaya www.qrstuff.com QR Stuff There are many more so you can investigate and find your personal favorite. Static vs Dynamic (Static means that they never can change, Dynamic means that you can use the same code and change the content. You need to pay for the service that allows you to change the content.

  15. How to Share… Edmodo Edmodo is a great place to store videos and children can also turn in work related to the video. www.edmodo.com Create a free account, have students create account and give them your code to join. Upload the video to your library and then you can attach it to a note or add it to an assignment. While you’re there add a quiz or post questions!

  16. Where to use these recorded lessons? *Create an extra center for your DI reading or math instruction. *Record a master teacher teaching a lesson and show it during computer lab to all students. *Record a short tutorial for students who need help at home. *My favorite!! Have parents be guest readers to surprise their children. *Record books *Press record and teach; then children who are absent, in resource, homebound, or out of the room can listen to the instruction they missed earlier.

  17. Where to use these recorded lessons? *Empower children to create their own tutorials for each other. *Use it to record the “boring” part of the lesson. There are always times in lessons that you have read over something or share background information. Record that, listen to it in Computer lab or at home via Edmodo/Schoolfusion and then use your class time for the fun and engaging lessons you never have time for.

  18. Other ways to use Wireless headphones *Create a Smart Notebook File that contains games linked to it. For example: create a slide with all addition games, then another with all subtraction etc. *Create a Smart Notebook File that contains tons of books or websites for ELA practice. *Use Compass Lessons, Learn Zillion, Khan Academy, Study Island, and much more. *United Streaming has great vowel videos alongside those for grammar and math concepts.

  19. Where do the headphones come in? Many teachers do Differentiated instruction in the form of centers… Wireless headphones allow you to let the children view these prerecorded lessons, games, and websites without interrupting the other students working. What are wireless headphones? You can purchase a set of 4 plus the receiver for about $160. If taken care of they can last for years. The receiver is plugged into the headphone jack and transmitted wirelessly to the headphones.

  20. Tasks to Try today… *Try to record at least one lesson using the Smart Recorder feature. *Determine where you’d like to store and how you’d like children to access… *Have you signed up for an account for: -Edmodo? -TeacherTube or SchoolTube Have you tried to create a QR Code?
