Matthew 4:18-25 “And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.“They immediately left their nets and followed Him. Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. And He called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father,

And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people. Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them. Great multitudes followed Him-- from Galilee, and from Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan.”

To Be Like The Teacher -We desire to be conformed to the image of Christ (Romans 8:29) -Discipleship is not just being religious, but rather becoming like our Savior, Jesus Christ (Gal 2:20)

To Follow His Steps 1 Pet 2:21--- “For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps…”

To Follow His Steps -We must be willing to make the sacrifice and deny ourselves to follow Jesus (Luke 9:23) -He is the only way to heaven (John 14:6)

To Change Our Will To His Will Matt 7:24 ---"Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man…”

  8. PRIORITY IN THE LIFE OF A DISCIPLE Luke 5:11 – “…they forsook all, and followed him.” THE DISCIPLES TOP PRIORITIES 1. To Be Like The Teacher 2. To Follow His Steps. 3. To Change Our Will To His Will -We must continue in Jesus’ words (John 8:31) -We must do the Father’s will (Matt. 7:21-23)

  9. PRIORITY IN THE LIFE OF A DISCIPLE Luke 5:11 – “…they forsook all, and followed him.” THE QUALITIES OF A DISCIPLE 1. The disciple obeys Jesus instead of pleasing self. -Obedience is an attitude of submission to God and compliance with His will in all things -Our old ways are substituted for His new ways (Romans 6:4; II Cor. 5:17; Gal. 6:15; Col. 3:3-11; Eph. 4:22-24) -See also Luke 5:4-5; Luke 6:46; John 14:15

The disciple obeys Jesus even if family is opposed -Our family can never take priority over the Lord (Luke 14:26) -No family member, friend, event, or activity can take priority over following Jesus (Luke 9:59-62) -Even if your family is upset if you follow Jesus, you have a new family in Christ

  11. PRIORITY IN THE LIFE OF A DISCIPLE Luke 5:11 – “…they forsook all, and followed him.” THE QUALITIES OF A DISCIPLE 3. The disciple obeys Jesus and does not allow possessions to control him -Many are so obsessed with material things, that they cannot find time for the Lord -Jesus warned about this error (Luke 12:15-21) -Those who are rich have a difficult time following Jesus (Luke 18:22-23)

  12. PRIORITY IN THE LIFE OF A DISCIPLE Luke 5:11 – “…they forsook all, and followed him.” THE QUALITIES OF A DISCIPLE 4. The disciple obeys Jesus under every circumstance - Our walk with the Lord is a “daily” walk (Luke 9:23) -We must be disciples of Jesus everywhere we go [work, school, home etc.] -Discipleship becomes something that we are, not just something we do once in a while

  13. PRIORITY IN THE LIFE OF A DISCIPLE Luke 5:11 – “…they forsook all, and followed him.” THE QUALITIES OF A DISCIPLE 5. The disciple obeys Jesus despite opposition from the world -The world thinks that Christians are missing out on all of the “fun” of sin -The world may even question why we won’t involve ourselves in their ways (I Pet 4:4) -We are told of the persecution of the disciple (I Peter 4:12-19)

  14. PRIORITY IN THE LIFE OF A DISCIPLE Luke 5:11 – “…they forsook all, and followed him.” THE QUALITIES OF A DISCIPLE 1. The disciple obeys Jesus instead of pleasing self. 2. The disciple obeys Jesus even if family is opposed. 3. The disciple obeys Jesus and does not allow possessions to control him. 4. The disciple obeys Jesus under every circumstance 5. The disciple obeys Jesus in spite of opposition from the world.

PRIORITY IN THE LIFE OF A DISCIPLE Luke 5:11 – “…they forsook all, and followed him.” HOW DO I KNOW IF JESUS TAKES PRIORITY IN MY LIFE? - HEAR – John 12:48 John 12:48 – “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.”

But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.”

PRIORITY IN THE LIFE OF A DISCIPLE Luke 5:11 – “…they forsook all, and followed him.” APPLICATION -Christianity is a way of life in which we attempt to become like Jesus -In this process of discipleship, we learn and apply His teachings to our lives -Obedience is the standard by which every disciple is measured (Hebrews 5:8-9)
