Standard Diploma Graduation Options A four-year, minimum of 24-credits standard program, or 18 credit ACCEL (see School Counselor for more information) Standard 24 Credit Graduation Requirements English – 4 credits Math – 4 credits (to include Algebra I and Geometry) Science – 3 credits (to include Biology) Social Studies – 3 credits ( World History, US History, Economics with Financial Literacy and US Government) Health Opportunities in Physical Education (HOPE)– 1 credit Fine Art or DOE Approved Practical Art – 1 credit Electives – as needed for a total of 24 credits (8 credits) Earn a 2.0 Unwtd. GPA Pass Gr. 10 ELA Common Core Assessment; (or SAT/ACT Reading/English concordant) Pass Algebra I End of Course Exam (EOC or PSAT,SAT, or ACT) Take Geometry ,Biology, US History End of Course Exam (EOC) Pass at least one online high school course- Can be a blended course taken at Chiles (i.e. HOPE, Liberal arts math 1, Math for college readiness) course must meet the 24 credits requirement Standard High School Diploma Designations Students may earn one or more designations on their standard high school diploma—the scholar designation and the merit designation per s. 1003.4285, F.S. Grading System Grading Scale Grade A B C D F Percent 90-100 80-89 70-79 60-69 0-59 Earning Credit We are on a two semester system: All courses earn 0.50 credit upon successful completion of each semester. Average of the First nine week grade (40%), Second nine week grade (40%) and *Midterm Exam (20%) equal the first semester grade (which goes on the transcript). Average of the Third nine week grade(40%), Fourth nine week grade (40%) and *Final exam (20%) equal the second semester grade (which goes on the transcript) *Classes that have a State EOC (Algebra I, Geometry, Biology, and US History) will not take a mid term or final exam and the EOC will count 30% of final grade. * 9thgrade English Classes will take a midterm, but not a final exam. The 3rdand 4thnine weeks grades will be averaged to determine the 2ndsemester grade (FSA/ELA taken instead- but no grade impact). Per grading period – you must earn a passing grade during the final grading period and/or exam to earn credit for the semester.

Grade Point Average  Students will have an official transcript with State unweighted and District weighted GPA after the completion of one semester of high school coursework.  Unweighted GPA is based on all courses awarded the standard grading of: A = 4.0 C = 2.0 B = 3.0 D = 1.0  Weighted GPA is based on: Honors and honors gifted courses are awarded an extra .5 for a semester grade of a C or better. A = 4.5 Advanced Placement and dual enrollment courses are awarded an extra 1.0 for a semester grade of C or higher. A = 5.0 Many different GPAs:  9 weeks GPA  Semester GPA  Cumulative GPA – District weighted and State unweighted  State unweighted GPA (used for promotion and graduation)  District weighted GPA (used for class rank and academic awards)  2.0 unweighted extracurricular GPA is required to participate in extracurricular activities  Chiles High School GPA is different than GPAs computed by Bright Futures, colleges and NCAA .

  13. Social Media Make it work for not against you!  Be careful what you post! Once you post something it is on there forever. Employers and College Admissions often look at your social media profile and posts.  No place for bullying. Student Affairs Office takes these threats very seriously and the consequences may be suspension or more.  Use Social Media wisely and follow college admissions, Chiles activities, etc.  Be the Sunshine- A kind word to someone in need is invaluable.

  15. Promotion to 10th grade  5 credits  1.0 unweighted State GPA  Standardized tests are used for academic placement, but not promotion. (FSA/ELA, Algebra I EOC)  Students who fail a course need to meet with their guidance counselor to discuss retake options. Options include:  Leon County Schools Adult and Community Education (ACE)  Chiles PLATO credit recovery program (not offered in summer)  Leon County Virtual School www.leonschools.net/virtual  Florida Virtual School www.flvs.net *All of these options require approval from your student’ ’s guidance counselor. Course registration for 2019-2020 school year will be in February.

Courses earning a “C” or better award an extra .5 for honors and 1.0 for AP and dual enrollment .

State/Community College  Admission based on Regular high school diploma  State of Florida/community colleges recommend that students take the same core high school courses that are required for state university admission  Students who take college prep courses in high school are more likely to be successful.  A student with an AA degree is guaranteed admission to a state university (not necessarily university or program of your choice unless enrolled in golden guarantee program), acceptance of 60 credit hours towards BA/BS degree and junior standing.  Placement tests are highly encouraged. The PERT will be used unless exempted by SAT or ACT scores.   22. NCAA Requirements  Required for any student athlete who wants to play at a Division I or II college.  Clearinghouse application should be completed by end of junior year. (online application and fee)  Minimum GPA in 16 core courses (DI 2.3, DII 2.0) and SAT/ACT scores.   23. Bright Futures Scholarships  Academic Scholars Award - Pro-rated per hour tuition coverage at a FL post secondary institution. Requirements: 3.5 weighted* GPA (16 required academic credits), 1290 SAT (Reading and Math) or 29 ACT (composite) and 100 hours of community service.  Florida Medallion Scholars Award - Pro-rated per hour tuition coverage at a FL post secondary institution. Requirements: 3.0 weighted* GPA (16 required academic credits) , 1170 SAT (Reading and Math) or 26 ACT (composite)and 75 hours of community service. 16 required academic credits include: 4 English 4 Math - Algebra I and higher. 3 Science 3 Social Science 2 World Languages (in the same language)

  24.  Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars Award - Pro-rated per hour tuition coverage for a vocational/technical program at a FL post secondary institution. Requirements: 3.0 weighted GPA (16 required credits for graduation), 3.5 GPA in a 3 credit vocational program, 30 hours of community service, and a passing score on a college placement test (SAT 440 verbal & math, ACT 19 Reading, 17 English, 19 Math or PERT Reading 106, Writing 103, Math 114 ) Can only be used for Vocational/Technical Degree (does not have to be in the same program student qualified in) TV Productions I TV Productions II TV Productions III Communication Technology I Communication Technology II Communication Technology III Culinary Arts I Culinary Arts II Culinary Arts III DCT I DCT II DCT III Digital Info Tech Web Design I Web Design II Criminal Justice I Criminal Justice II Criminal Justice III *** Satisfactory completion of a three credit sequential vocational program may award TCC credit toward an A.S. degree. LCS honors foreign language is not honors for BF GPA calculation.

Community Service Guidelines  Activities must be rendered for not-for-profit organizations or agencies.  Directly address identified social problems in areas such as health, education, environment, or public safety.  Activities must be unpaid and cannot be work done for an immediate family member.  New- May use hours spent helping with a political campaign or a business externship that is unpaid. Hours can be earned after promotion to high school (summer after 8thgrade). Students maintain records until senior year. Guidelines and forms can be accessed on Chiles website - Guidance.   

  29. Action Plan For Freshmen:  Set academic and personal goals to accomplish this year and formulate a plan for 10thgrade. Plan to take a strong curriculum but maintain a balance.  Get involved in activities at school/community. Keep a folder with activities, awards, etc.  Perform community service and volunteerism. Maintain records of service.  Start researching scholarship opportunities. A few underclassmen opportunities are available in the guidance office. Often Essay contests, poster contests, etc. List is available on our web site.  Take a career inventory to help identify strengths and weaknesses and to research possible majors and careers in these areas.
