  2. What is “Geography”? • Discuss with your partner: “What is geography?” • The word “geography” can be broken down into two parts: • “Geo” meaning “the world”and • “Graphy” meaning “to write” • Geo + graphy = GEOGRAPHY • Geography is writing about the world

  4. The Five Themes • There are 5 themes in geography” • Location • Place • Human-Environment Interaction • Movement • Region Let’s look at each in more detail…

  5. 1. Location • This is a particular place or position. • There are two types: absolute location or relative location. • The map elements we use to identify location are: • Symbols • Grids • Latitude and Longitude Question: What kind of location do street addresses tell us? What about if we give someone directions to somewhere?

  6. 2. Place • Place tells us the physical (e.g. mountains, oceans) and human (e.g. population) aspects of a location. • Each place in the world has unique characteristics. • Human characteristics are: people, population, culture, language • Place is important because it allows us to compare and contrast two or more places on Earth.

  7. 3. Human-Environment Interaction • There are 3 aspects to this theme: • Dependency – What do we use from the Earth? • Adaptation – How do we modify ourselves to the environment? • Modification – How do we change the Earth for our needs? Question: How have humans shaped the earth?

  8. 4. Movement • Movement is the translocation of humans, their goods and their ideas around the globe.

  9. Region • Region is an area on the planet that has unifying characteristics. • These characteristics could be human or physical or both. • Example: Vancouver is a region unified by a common government. Question: With your partner, can you think of some examples of regions?
