  3. The aim for today… • To understand the HIV disease and how the disease can cause several problems on many levels (personal, social, medical and economic)

  4. Objectives for today • 1. Identify key facts surrounding HIV transmission, symptoms and pathology • 2. Describe possible symptoms of HIV and opportunistic infections • 3.Research and apply this knowledge to a problem surrounding HIV in your group (social, personal, etc.)

  5. HIV- What is it? • A virus which causes the AIDS syndrome. • Affects the T Cells in your immune system. • Over time, this compromises your ability to fight against infection .

  7. Quick statistics • At the end of 2012, there were an estimated 98,400 people in the UK living with HIV. The majority were infected through sex (41,000 gay and bisexual men and 53,000 heterosexuals). • More than 1 in 5 people with HIV (over 20,000) do not know they are infected. • The World Health Organization estimates that around 34 million people in the world are living with HIV

  8. What does it do? • 1. Infection of the HIV virus- now inside your body. • 2. Reaches your blood stream, binds to T cells • 3. T Cell becomes a host, viral DNA incorporated into the cell nucleus

  9. How does this damage your immune system? • 4. This changes the T cell function- replicate more of the HIV virus • 5. This process leads to all of these copies to leave the T cell and ultimately kill the cell, damaging your immune system

  15. Economic Problems • Drugs • Cure? • Think about countries with medical care which isn’t advanced as the UK’s • What will happen to those people? • How will that then affect the economy?
