Prohibition refers to the legal act of banning substances like alcohol and tobacco, which led to significant societal changes. The movement began in the Oregon territory in 1849 and faced various legislative challenges until the 18th Amendment was passed in 1917, prohibiting the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages. This led to the rise of illegal activities like bootlegging. Prohibition lasted for 78 years until the 21st Amendment repealed it in 1933. The era had lasting effects, including increased crime rates and the innovation of refrigerator cars for illicit trade.
