  1. The Upper Scioto RiverWhat Its Impairments Are And What Concerns You Should Have By Madysen George Jane Kelleher Aarathi Sahadevan

  2. Upper Scioto River 101 • Who is impacted by the Upper Scioto? • The majority of the Upper Scioto Watershed is located in Hardin, Marion, and Union counties • Smaller portions are Allen, Auglaize, Logan, Wyandot, Crawford and Delaware counties

  3. Upper Scioto River 101(Continued) • An Impairment is an issue that reduces the quality of the watershed • The graph below shows some of the impairments of the Upper Scioto River that we will elaborate on later

  4. Types of Impairments in the Upper Scioto • The Upper Scioto watershed has been in its current unhealthy condition for many years • Along with agricultural land , others impairments are dams, channelization, and faulty septic management systems

  5. Agricultural Land Use and How it Effects the IBI in the Scioto River • Hypothesis: When the percentage of agricultural land use is high, average diversity of fish (or IBI) will go down • Agricultural land use percentage is approx 80%, other common land uses are; developed (8%), forest (6%) and pasture/hay (4%)

  6. Comparison Between Agricultural Land Use and the IBI This is where the IBI score should be. If the IBI gets below this level, the water quality is very bad.

  7. Hypothesis: A lower level of nitrate in the Upper Scioto watershed would increase the diversity of fish in the area.

  8. Life in the River • The Hypothesis: As the amount of macroinvertebrates increase, the diversity of fish will also increase • The graph shows the relationships between the two measures of organisms

  9. Diversity of Fish vs. Macroinvertebrates

  10. Our Conclusion • Most of the information available for analysis supports our hypothesis • Concluding that a decrease in nitrate levels in the stream will increase the overall well-being of the watershed • It is our job to clean up the mess that we created. The cleaning of this watershed would benefit humans and wildlife alike
