  2. How do you collect news? • Beat check, reporters, wire service, press releases (furnished news), ‘VNR’, etc. • Enterprising • Interviewing • Phone / in person (radio / TV) • Designed for actuality / sound bite • Research for the story

Producing a TV newscast • A multicamera production .... • That requires extensive pre-production • ‘Producer’ stacks the show • Asst./Associate Producers write stories • NewStar, AvStar, ENPS, etc. • During the newscast… • Producer with software • Director calling action • Live shots feeds • The ‘Rundown’ is your directing script

Shooting a news story • Technical reminders • Close mic -- lavalier -- monitor audio • Always take cam-mounted light; light always falls on subject • How long to shoot • Perishable video, missed shots concern • Shooting to edit • In camera edits? • 4-7 second for each shot when edited • Moving shots are longer • NO zooms or pans in any shot -- actions moves in front of the camera

Writing a news story • BEFORE you sit down at the edit station... • LOG your tape -- make an EDL • Identify good shots, including incue and outcue / time code • WRITE a rough draft script (use samples from course outline) -- we’re using a single-column approach • Now you’re ready to start capturing clips

  8. Editing a news story • Final Cut Pro Settings • Log in to your assigned station • Create a folder with Your Name as the folder name (use one from Interview) • Create a folder with YourLastName News Story • Set FCP settings immediately
