  3. What’s expected of you? • Participation!! • If you miss class, your grade will be seriously compromised • You MUST participate in the hands on activities. NOT JUST OBSERVATIONS! • Hands on activities • Make the measurements • Think critically about what they mean • Learn about different types of instruments - functions and limitations • 10 Exercises – homework • Written background information • Lecture information • http://share.disl.org/techmethods • Complete each assignment on time • Seminars • Tuesday, June 10th – 1pm (class will start at 2p) • Tuesday, June 24th – 1 pm (class will start at 2p) • Reserve Reading • Exam

Phases of Research • Starts with an Idea • Research the idea • Has someone already done this? • Do you understand the question well enough to design a project? • What are all the factors that might impact your question? • What do you have to know to answer your question? • What hardware would you need to research your question? • Collect data • Analyze data and present it for review

Cruise Plan • Systematic approach – PLANNING IS ESSENTIAL! • Estimate size and capability of vessel • Assign duties • Informs captain and crew • Saftey – others on land know your plan • Components • Name and number • Date and alternate • Objectives • Detailed plan for entire cruise • Estimate distances, speed and how long each task takes • Station location (lat and long) • Personnel • Comments • Special gear • Unusual activities • Distribution

Shipboard Safety • Before leaving • Weather – NO ASSUMPTIONS! • Proper Attire • Shoes • Proper clothing • Protection • Seasickness? • Proper attitude • Follow ALL rules of chief scientist and crew • After leaving • Follow authority (captain) • Ask permission to get on/off boat or go anywhere other than main deck and scientific cabin • Beware of instruments and overhead tackle • Sea legs • Don’t litter - but throw up overboard – NOT IN THE HEAD! • Don’t sit on the side • No swimming or jumping overboard • Communicate problems through chief scientist • Know where safety equipment is and how to use it
