Introduction: In a world of ever-changing technology, where what is great today is obsolete tomorrow, the fourslide lives on. Manufacturers once did not think twice about the cost of tooling, it was just the cost of doing business, the less expensive tooling of fourslides have become very important indeed. Because of higher quality, shorter lead times, the cost savings of fourslides cannot easily be beaten.
Fourslides were once used mostly for complex work such as that with involved forming, bends beyond ninety degrees, smart manufacturers are now choosing the process over the conventional press to cut part cost, speed product delivery, and streamline quality assurance. Fourslides are used for precision metal stampings, flat springs and wire. Although Animated Manufacturing does not make springs, if a part is stamped or formed that is less than two inches long and less than 0.075” thick, it may befourslide products and part.
A fourside is one large progressive die. Unlike conventional progressive tooling where each station is inside the die, a fourslide itself is two different stations. The first is a die that puts holes or other shapes in the metal strip; the second is a station that has a fixed mandrel or post around which tooling comes in a four directions at the same time. Likeprogressive tool and die, timing in each station is critical, only instead of the die doing the work; fourslides use a series of cams for timing each station.
