  3. What is Activist Learning? • Activist Learning is an intentional strategy for creating knowledge characterized by taking action to realize just relationships that transform unequal power structures in our personal, social, political, environmental, spiritual, and economic lives.

  4. Activists learn best when: • involved in new experiences, problems and opportunities • working with others in business games, team tasks, role-playing • being thrown in the deep end with a difficult task • chairing meetings, leading discussions

  5. Activists learn less when: • listening to lectures or long explanations • reading, writing or thinking on their own • absorbing and understanding data • following precise instruction to the letter • Resource: http://www.campaign-for-learning.org.uk/cfl/yourlearning/whatlearner/activists.asp

  6. Drawbacks • Try not to push your own personal or political agenda • Some parents will not want their kids involved in certain activist learning activities. • For example: Homelessness, alcoholism and drug addiction, global warming, and child soldiers.

  7. Hurricane Sandy demolishes Toronto • What are some of the areas of the city that would need help? • Pick a teachable? • How can you teach your students about activist learning through the subject area? • Where can you get involved? • For example: (Math) Food banks how much does it cost to feed one person? Family of four? How many people each day?

  8. Activity: Getting Involved • Pick a social issue (i.e. Hurricane Sandy) • What are the consequences? (i.e. homeless) • What curriculum expectation will be covered? • What actions can we take as a class?

  9. Consolidation key points • Learn by getting involved in a social issue • Knowledge is learned through taking action • Learn to build relationships • Learn through new experiences • Build leadership skills
