Award Descriptions • College of Fellows • Since 1986, the SME College of Fellows has elected members who have made outstanding contributions to the social, technological and educational aspects of the profession. This is a distinctive and prestigious honor that can only be earned through years (20 or more) of dedication and service. • Honorary Membership • The award is conferred upon an individual of recognized ability and stature who has, by voluntary action, contributed their substantial skills and talent to accomplish the goals of the Society.

Award Descriptions Cont’d • Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer • Since 1980, the award has honored innovators age 35 and younger in both academia and industry for exceptional accomplishments, such as technical publications, patents or technical-professional leadership. • Award of Merit • Since 1958, this award has honored SME chapter members who have made valued, balanced contributions to the Society's professional activities and growth.

  6. Award Descriptions Cont’d • NAMRI/SME S.M. Wu Research Implementation Award • This award recognizes individuals for outstanding original research, which, when implemented, has had a significant commercial and/or societal impact. • J.H. "Jud" Hall Composites Manufacturing Award • Presented annually to an individual who has contributed to composites manufacturing or tooling technology through leadership, technical developments, patents or educational activities.

Award Descriptions Cont’d • Rapid Technologies & Additive Manufacturing Awards • RTAM/SME Industry Achievement Award • Honors an individual, team or company for outstanding accomplishments that advance additive manufacturing technology and industry. • RTAM/SME Dick Aubin Distinguished Paper Award • Recognizes a technical paper describing innovative applications of rapid prototyping processes and techniques.

  8. International Awards • These seven awards recognize significant contributions to the field of manufacturing engineering in the areas of manufacturing technologies, processes, technical writing, education, research, management and service to the Society.

  9. International Awards Cont’d • Eli Whitney Productivity Award • Awarded for distinguished accomplishments in improving capability within the broad concept of orderly production. • Joseph A. Siegel Service Award • Awarded to an SME member for significant and unique contributions that benefit the Society. This award is the only International Honor Award that must only be conferred upon SME members.

Burnham Manufacturing Management Award • Recognizes exceptional success in the integration of the infrastructure and processes of manufacturing through innovative use of human, technical and financial resources. • SME Frederick W. Taylor Research Medal • Honors significant published research leading to a better understanding of materials, facilities, principles, operations and their application to improve manufacturing processes.

Sargent Progress Award • Recognizes significant accomplishments in the field of manufacturing processes, methods or systems. • SME Education Award • Honors the educator most respected for the development of manufacturing-related curricula, fostering sound training methods or inspiring students to enter the profession of manufacturing. • SME Gold Medal • Recognizes outstanding service to the manufacturing engineering profession in technical communications through published literature, technical writings or lectures.
